Thread: BB 9700 PIN Locked?

The device was probably owned by somebody who had an active Blackberry service

Blackberry PIN is tied to the Device Email Id and many users just swipe the phone (wipe the handheld) and sell it
They forget to disassociate the PIN -> device email id

You can do the following:
1. You can try to delete the device email ID, if there is one
2. Try to delete the service books of this device email ID
3. Call up your service provide and ask them to link your Blackberry service account with this new PIN

I would go for option 3

The piece was a brand new one not used. However the service providers were not able to do anything about this like i mentioned they said it is pin locked to Vodafone. The handset officially was locked to Vodafone and then opened by the shopkeeper before selling but in brand new condition. The phone is in Jeddah Saudi Arabia and what i was able to figure out is that the phone has a 3g logo on it but no edge etc on it. Also the host routing table seems to be empty. I also tried to go to the blackberry site of STC the service provider who bb services are being use in the phone but it does not register the phone. If a message is sent from the host routing table to register now it says message sent but no reply message is received

I also tried calling Vodafone pune they asked for the pin no and serial no but were not able to find the phone in the system

Guess that is all the details i can prove will try to update software and see if i get lucky but i don't seem to be feeling lucky

Hi Meherab

Where did you buy the phone from? India or Saudi?
How do you know it is/was locked to Vodafone? Which Vodafone? India, UK, Europe...
I believe the voice service is working for all sim cards...STC, Voda. Pune, etc etc.....which means the phone is unlocked for sure.

Forget the 3g logo. If a phone has 3g, it will also have edge, 2.5 g, 2 g, 1 g and no g's. Dont worry on that.

Now you say you/ phone user has subscribed to BB service plan in Saudi....

Have you gone to their site ,registered your Imei and pin and setup your email id's for your 9700, or does it say invalid pin on the providers website itself?

You are absolutely correct i went on to their site and tried to register the phone there but in vain. The reason why i am guessing it was a locked phone from Vodafone is because of its logo. I do not know from which country the phone is from as there is no way to find that out. And to your last Q the phone was purchased from jeddah and also that all services are active on the phone, phone sms etc

Logo has nothing to do with PIN lock etc. I have an AT&T which was SIM locked and its working fine here
I am very sure that the device is not brand new, it has been used by somebody.

When you subscribe for Blackberry service, your device PIN gets attached to a device email id
For e.g. my device PIN is tied to kbvenu@airtel.blackberry.com

If I try to sell this device to someone, without clearing this association, it will not work.
Check if there are service books of any email ID and delete them

Also if you had already subscribed for Blackberry services, you need to login to your carrier BIS page and use the "device switch" to switch your services to the new PIN

In fact, on my wifes 9700, which I used for a week sometime back, we just went to each others providers BB service page online ( Mine Airtel and hers vodafone) changed the IMEI and PIN, added the email id's and it worked fine for both.


Venu> Can you post those details, which we went thru., while unlocking my 9700, here,so maybe Meherab can check if the phone is actually unlocked ( which I am sure is). MEPD or something? What should it show after unlocking ,Meherab can check on his phone.

Another thing that came to my mind is, since the phone is Voda. branded and Meherab is on Voda., it could still be unlocked, contrary to dealers claim.
Or is there any thing like partial unlocking :

Or the phone could be blacklisted as stolen and Voda. somewhere has blocked the pin.

will try that towards the evening when i get back home will need to check the service books etc. the pice i can say was new in nature definitely not used. Anyways that is secondary let me get back home and keep you guys posted
