Blackberry rules the Enterprise
CIO Association of India (CAI) conducted a survey to understand how CIOs perceive enterprise mobility and what factors influence the decision making. Here I am sharing some of the key findings related to Blackberry.
-
BlackBerry is the most popular enterprise mobility platform.
BlackBerry leads as the popular platform with 80% of the respondents indicating that their companies currently use it. However, many companies also support more than one platform, including the iPhone, Android, Symbian, and Windows Mobile.

-
BlackBerry is the preferred solution partner for most respondents.
This is true of respondents across industries, and large and small companies. A clear majority (61%) of the respondents rated it as the best platform for enterprise mobility, with the Android at a distant second (18%).

-
BlackBerry is popular even with CIOs using other enterprise mobility platforms.
Current BlackBerry customers rated it as their preferred partner. So did the respondents using other platforms – more than 40% of iPhone, Windows Mobile, and Android users tagged it as the preferred partner.

BlackBerry leads the deployments currently in progress, but the Android is also gaining popularity.
A majority of the respondents – about 42% – have BlackBerry platforms being currently deployed (in progress). Android is also gaining momentum with more than a third of the respondents (34.2%) using it for current deployments.
The BlackBerry is the preferred platform across industries.
The exception to this is the Government or Public Sector, which seems to lean towards Android-based solutions. Windows has some appeal in the Hospitality segment, but across all other industries, the BlackBerry leads as the preferred platform.
CIOs prefer the BlackBerry platform for its security and ease-of-use features. This is what they say:
“The ease of use and intelligence of the device, backed by the security features, give it an edge over other mobile platforms/devices available.”
“Enterprise-grade, secure, proven mobile device management, stable.”
“It works best with email.”
“Vastly used and accepted by the users, cost competitiveness.”
“The BlackBerry solutions were designed for enterprise mobility itself and they remain one of the best in the industry. Other players jumped into it later, copying most of the existing features.”
“Secured, facilitation of messenger, mails and Internet access; apps for this platform are far more stable than any other platform.”
“We already have the infrastructure in place and no other brand gives the kind of response time that BlackBerry gives.”
“A study was done and this was found to be the best option based on several parameters.”
For other platforms please refer the actual report (Links are given below).
Survey was launched on 6th September, 2011, and responses accepted till 19th September, 2011. Survey was sent to the CAI member community and received 305 responses.

Playbook for non-Blackberry user???
This is my second blog post on Playbook that I bought about 15 days ago and boy… I just love it.
Many of my friends, who are not using a BB (Blackberry), were curious to know more about my latest craze or rather my latest gadget. My words emit pride as I talk about my Playbook with all the show off! That was the moment when a thought struck my mind, ‘Would non BB users also choose to buy the Playbook?’
Seriously, the willingness to buy Playbook I have only seen in those who are already using a Blackberry. However what I think is it’s a kind of tablet which anyone can buy who wants to buy a wi-fi only tablet. This is as good as any other wi-fi tab we have in market.
Then some guys start comparing the specs, my point is what is in numbers? What we should look for is performance. It is pretty amazing to touch, pretty cool graphics, true multi-tasking, flash supported browser etc etc.. I had NFS, Asphalt, Browser and one more game running in background and I couldn’t see any lag in the performance. Now I don’t need to care as to how many GHz CPU I have, I am happy with the performance.
What RIM could have done is, they could have promoted the Playbook for non BB users as well. They are pretty creative with their ads, ‘Do what you Love, Love what you do’. It’s their ads which made Curve 8520 famous amongst the teenagers. I don’t remember a single ad featuring Playbook. If they had the mindset of launching the tablet as a standalone wi-fi tablet with an extra star for having a BB for an added advantage to access mail, BBM and browse then I am sure it would have encouraged more people to buy Playbook.
So if you want my call, I strongly recommend the Playbook for non BB users as well. Go for it ! I Say
RIM PlayBook making news again after its launch in April, this time only for good.
Little less than a year ago RIM launched its first tablet named “Playbook” (PB). Many including me thought that ‘Blackbook’ would have been a better name for it. It got a poor response from market and received a huge setback. I had been using a Blackberry (BB) for more than 2 years then; and I too was not very optimistic to buy it either.
Then after 9 months RIM kind of re-launched the tab with revised prices, almost 50% discounted prices this time. May be they wanted to clear the stockpile. And that’s when I got one, as a gift from my wife.
I must say I was pretty amazed with the build quality. RIM has always been good with quality of hardware with high end devices. It fits pretty well in hands, not too big nor to small for a tablet. Great response to touch, true multi tasking ability and bridge capability to connect to my Blackberry. All this bundled in one package at this price is highly appreciated.
What RIM could have done was to promote this discount in a better way so as to attract more non BB users too. (My thoughts on it will be presented in another blog post)
Today what excites me the most was news that came out from RIM in CES last week. Soon we would have OS 2.0 coming for PB, which means native email client, native calendar, android app support and much more to come. Also, now as many people are grabbing their PB am certain that app developers will be more interested in building apps and coming up with more innovative features for the RIM tablet.
Though many said RIM is dying, I am pretty sure it’s not the time yet. RIM still has abundant potential which can take it a long away. All I am waiting for right now is OS 2.0 for PB and launch of QNX BBs as soon as possible. Hope the launch happens in Q3 of 2012.
Right now my confidence in RIM has only increased and am looking forward for more from them. They certainly know to delight their customers on a timely basis regardless of their critics’ view!

Blackberry Bold 9900 – Initial impressions
Today our group member Suvo shared his initial impressions about Blackberry Bold 9900 after 12 hours of use. After his permission I am sharing his email here.
OK .. so almost 12 hours gone by with my BB 9900 .. Below are my initial observations..
Build is absolutely fantastic – I think, every where this has been highlighted. I have never seen a blackberry built so well and that too such light weight… It fits in your palm really well, giving you a wonderful grip. The metallic band on the side gives a super professional look.
However if folks here have fascination on the form factor of Galaxy S2, iphone should wait for Torch 9860 .. This is bold after all…
Keyboard – This is the darling delight. The keys are silk smooth, unlike the 9780 keyboard which was tight in the beginning and only after usage it used to get smooth … The keyboard spread out gives me an amazing typing speed.. Thoroughly enjoying the same…
Audio - Lot of friends here have asked me about the audio.. Well the speakerphone is better than iPhone 4 in my opinion.. Internal music quality as you hear in headphones not par with iPhone music manipulations…
Audio speakers are much much louder than Bold 9780. Small example, a ringtone set at volume 8 in 9780 is at par with the same set at volume 6 in 9900…
Screen resolution - Good , crisp and bright.. additional backlight around the trackpad is also very very nice…
Camera - Disappointing.. Bold 9780 used to take better pictures with Auto Focus. This one does not have AF but has Image Stabilization.. not sure whether I am getting any advantage either.. Has built in Scene modes.. but am not sure, why AF got eliminated. I have not taken many pictures though and will not take either on Bold.. So neglecting for now… Not a setback for me in usability, but definitely from a possession perspective..
Overall performance - Very snappy .. Credit goes to the 1.2 GHz processor.. at least you will feel the difference in speed.. touch is very responsive and you will understand that a 1.2 GHz processor is working behind .. smooth touches…good scrolling …
Browser - Has more functionalities than OS6 on account of additional touch.. but whether the browsing speed has improved because of browser enhancements or the processor working behind is too early to tell.. Pinch to zoom works fine absolutely .. but i have seen slight checkerboards while pinch to zoom… overall not at all hampering usability..
Software – This is nothing but refined OS6, with icon improvements. People who are already in OS6 would take few minutes to get at ease…
Software is buggy … it does not freezes or hangs, but I have faced two random reboots in last 20 hours… One while i was in BBM and another while I was composing an email .. both the time after reboot i checked event logs and i could see JVM errors… planning to upgrade the Vodafone DE OS today night…
As per PMan’s thoughts, I think this is a software problem and will get rectified over a period of time…
The inbuilt OS of Redington is 261 and application memory left is 190 MB .. Now this is slightly a matter of concern??? Well I see there are lots of languages installed in the OS and all Asian languages.. Am planning to uninstall all those and see how much i gain … If I get to 220, I should be fine hovering around 180 free space after my installations.. Well i dont any install 100 apps, I install only those which i use.. So lets see..
Even in a 768 MB available App memory, getting 190 MB free for your apps, only indicates that touch screen software is taking a lot of space… and also additional is the NFC drivers… Some of the apps which comes pre-installed are
Facebook, twitter, bb maps, docs to go premium, bb protect, yahoo msngr, gtalk, msn mngr, smart tags
Packaging - RIM has done a cost cutting here. All folks here will know that RIM used to give various PIN connectors inside retail boxes (UK, US, INDIA), I found them always handy on my overseas travel. This time they just gave the India PIN … But then there also they have curtailed cost. There is USB charger and not separate wall charger… The data cable goes to the charging plug through USB port and phone gets charged. This results in less clutter – so some people may find it good …..So you have the data cable and wall USB plug unit (India Pins) and that’s all …
Yes, the charging port is at the left side. Single convenience key on the right – defaulted to camera…
LED indicator is like TORCH
What else … You wanna know???
How I am feeling —- Do we have any heaven more than the 7th level???
Does it compare with SGS2 and iPhone .. Well I don’t compare apples and oranges.., they are two genetically different fruits
so don’t ask me that question….
